The Exodus from Old Earth

Old Earth got messed up, then used up. The three Great Powers — the Third French Empire, the United States of America and Australia, and the People’s Republic of China — finally settled their differences for long enough to build the Generation Ships, and send humankind to the stars.

Three of those ships arrived in the Phantine system. The folks on them settled Phantine Major, the habitable planet that the instruments of Old Earth had identified. But as they explored the rest of the Phantine system, they found the abandoned alien ships. It took years to work out the technology on those ships, but when we did, we found we could send ships through a kind of wormhole in space, something the science boys decided to call a “slipstream”.

Exploring The Cluster

The slipsteams connect a cluster of ten systems. Each of those systems had planets or moons suitable for settlement, or good candidates for terraforming. Soon, we had spread from Phantine Major across more than two dozen different worlds. And wherever we went, we looked for more clues about the aliens who left those ships. In the JFK system we found a few more ships, and a few more clues about their technology. But we found no traces of settlement on any world, and no clue as to why they disappeared.
